5 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. 6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”
The vision that God gave to Israel through the prophet Ezekiel was awe inspiring. The scene was so powerful in fact that Ezekiel didn’t really know how to respond when he saw the field of dry skeletons. By every other account known to man there is no way that dry bones could be brought back to life, but Ezekiel’s experience shows us that God often does His best work when the circumstances seem dire.
Before I became a pastor I often told my wife there was no way I would ever leave American soil. There was simply no desire in me to do any type of work for the Lord that required me to step out of my comfort zone, leave my family, and minister to people who didn’t speak my language. I believe I once told God it would never happen.
Let me give you some free advice. If you want to book yourself a one-way ticket out of your comfort zone, using the word never and God in the same sentence will get you on that flight faster than you can blink. Why? Because never is a “dry bones” word, and God is in the business of making dry bones come alive.
In the ten years that followed my declaration of never doing mission work outside of the United States, the Lord saw fit to make my dry bones come alive. He has sent me out of the country on six separate occasions to share His Word and serve His people.
Think about that. God is in the business of bringing life to things that we thought would never happen. He showed Ezekiel what He was capable of, and I bet Ezekiel’s eyes were bugging out of his head when the dry bones began to click together and the flesh and tendons moved into place. God was saying, “Do not put me in a box. I can do anything!”
Are there things in your life that you have been praying for but now you’ve all but given up on them? Do you need God to bring some dry bones back to life?
Never give up…and Never say Never with God.
Heavenly Father, I pray that you would bring new life to my spirit every day. There are times when I feel empty and dead inside, but I know you have the ability to breathe new life into me. Help me to trust that you can do all things, and help me to know that never is a word that doesn’t apply to you.
